LG TeleCom was incorporated in July 1996 as the world¡¯s first mobile telecommunications service provider of CDMA technology. The Company launched its commercial operations of Personal Communications Service (PCS) in October 1997 and since then has enjoyed continuous growth.
In May 1999, LG TeleCom became the first operator to launch wireless internet service in Korea. As the first in the world to develop Java Station, a Java technology used in CDMA phones, LG TeleCom has been leading Korea¡¯s wireless internet technology.
LG TeleCom also launched the world¡¯s first Ez-Pass service enabling payment of public transportation fares via PCS phones.
Furthermore, LG TeleCom initiated a new era of mobile financial transactions by launching the world¡¯s first infrared payment service that allows credit card purchases via PCS phones.
Based on its advanced technology and data services, LG TeleCom will promote 2GHz band CDMA2000 service and continue to develop innovative and convenient mobile telecommunication services. |

LGT has been using the WAP gateway of ¡®A¡¯, the world leading provider of mobile communication products and services which occupied large portion of the WAP markets around the world. However, the cost of maintaining the WAP gateway was so high, and the proprietary specification of ¡®A¡¯ caused many problems: non-compatibility with other internationally standardized systems, and closed architecture too much dependent on the vendor.
What is more, ¡®A¡¯ imposed considerable amount of license fees on the operator on the basis of active WAP service users, which is too much for the operator to admit especially in these days when the wireless internet service is widely generalized. Considering the problems from different angles, LGT finally decided to replace the previous systems with new, stable ones for long term benefits.
It was however, too risky for LGT to simply replace the system which was being operated at the time. The system newly deployed should cut down the cost of system operation and maintenance, and should provide at least same or better performance compared with the previous system. Of course, the system should be replaced without service interruption. |

Putting all those requirements together, UANGEL proposed that its UAWAP Gateway can replace the previous system. The proposed system basically supports all the functions provided by the previous system and can provide even better performance on condition that the replacement should be done seamlessly.
UAWAP Gateway
UANGEL¡¯s WAP Gateway (UAWAP Gateway) is a highly compatible, cost-effective system which is designed according to the international standard. UAWAP Gateway fully supports all the functions previously provided and is even more advanced in performance so that it can provide the subscribers with higher quality WAP service.
Replacement Process
UANGEL went through preliminary processes elaborately, in order to replace the system without service interruption.
The preliminary processes include:
- Various handset test
- Performance and functional test
- Service interface test
- Interworking test with the related systems
- Commercialization test
UANGEL performed above tests again and again to verify whether the UAWAP Gateway can properly replace the previous system. After completing all these tests, UANGEL replaced the existing system with its UAWAP Gateway successfully, satisfying the customer¡¯s needs. |

Owing to its advanced technology and persistent efforts to settle the problems, UANGEL successfully removed the source of trouble of LGT. UANGEL carried out various preliminary tests very carefully to minimize a problem that may occur during the replacement, and completed it without interrupting the WAP service being operated. As a result, LGT is now benefited in every way: the cost of system operation and maintenance is reduced considerably, the WAP service error rate is also decreased, and the customer experienced service quality is enhanced as well.
Currently, LGT is providing flexible and stable WAP service to the subscribers, through the UAWAP Gateway. |
